It's not exactly a typical story of the heroes overcoming the odds and the main villains of the story, the Shivans, are almost impossibly powerful. The story is pretty decent I found (though it may be a case of rose-tinted lenses here). There are dozens of fighters flying around these absolutely ENORMOUS capital ships, torpedoes fired and destroyed with flak, all the while the capital ships carve each other up with huge and gorgeous energy beams. The gameplay is pretty fast and frantic at times and the spectacle of them is incredible. Many consider this the best space combat sim ever. It's a space combat game (think the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games from LucasArts, also highly recommended). Freespace 2Īnother older game that I absolutely adore. The game has been updated slightly as The Ur-Quan Masters and is free. Following-up on clues is encouraged but sometimes not necessary. It's also very possible to miss some aliens, as the game is open-ended and exploration is encouraged. The dialogue is a lot of fun, but some of the aliens have very moving histories, particularly the Kzer-Za and Kohr-Ah. The real stand-out to me is the story telling. Combat is pretty simple just two ships on a top-down perspective navigate around a planet taking shots at each other. The gameplay consists of traveling around a large galaxy map, exploring star systems, mining materials wherever you safely can, talking with wonderfully diverse and sometimes goofy aliens, and some combat. I kind of think of this as roguelike, as you will get farther along the more you play, especially if you take notes. There is not a lot of guidance in the game, as is the style of very old games. I remember locking myself in a room at night, with a large paper hyperspace map, and playing this game for several hours. SC2 is a very old adventure game that was an extremely influential game for me when a kid.
